  • GHS Crew Summary - Early Spring 2004

    Fall 2003 Season Wrap-up

The fall 2003 season drew a roster of about 85 students, roughly half-and-half experienced rowers and first time novices. Each of these groups, in turn, consisted of half boys and half girls. Highlights included participation in the 'Head of the Hartford', a 2.5 mile head race in Hartford, the 'Head of the Connecticut', a 3.5 mile head race in Middletown, and the boys' varsity representing GHS for the first time at the 'Head of the Charles' regatta in Boston.

Eight boats were entered in the Hartford race (2 each boys and girls varsity, and 2 each boys and girls novices), 4 boats in the Middletown race (no novices), and just the one crew in Boston. In Hartford, the boys' varsity finished 12th out of 21, while the girls were 7th out of 24. In Middletown, the boys were 36th out of 57, while the girls came in 13th out of 51 entries. In Boston, in the 'youth eights' event, that included many college freshman and foreign crews, the boys finished 47th out of 50.

    The following photos show:

  • an informal shot of most of the entire crew.

Head coach Jeanine Kreh coached the varsity boats with the assistance of coach Alice Kast, while the novices were coached by Jeff Carstens, assisted by Bill Keister, Bob Laperla, Gerhard Schade, Steve Fluhr, and Sean Peoples. The dockmasters were organized and led by Julie Kamis.

    Spring 2004 Season-Outlook

Rowing operations out of Seaboard Marina began on March 30th, under the leadership of Head Coach Jeanine Kreh, again assisted by Alice Kast and Jeff Carstens. Some 60 rowers are on the roster, as listed below ( no first-time rowers are being accepted in the spring season due to the swift river conditions). There is a preponderance of girls, so there should be 2 boats each of boys varsity, girls varsity, and girls novices.
